Buying Building Materials
When I built my house 20 years ago you had to use the phone or fax to get quotes
for building materials. Now it is a lot easier because you can use email or the
internet to get prices. To save money you need to shop around to get the best
deals on different products. Do not use a single Builders Merchant as you will
end up paying more money. I have put together a list of suppliers who you should
consider to get your Selfbuild Building Materials.
Always consider Wickes and B&Q as there prices have VAT
included. Screwfix have some very good prices on hardware and smaller items.
Just recently I was project managing my sons house
renovation. The main bulk of the plastering materials came from a local builders
merchant (Rightways - Nelson and Blackburn). The bathroom suite, doors and
Kitchen was from Wickes (using a special offer £20 off when you spend £100 we
saved £340 a great saving when you are on a limited budget). The MDF skirting
and architrave came from Howarth Timber. Central heating goods came from an
internet supplier (MrCentralHeating) and we were never away from Screwfix. Light
fittings, tiles and many small items came from internet suppliers or Ebay. So as
you can see I used a lot of different suppliers for Building Materials to keep
the cost as low as possible.
