Building Materials Purchase
The
cost of building materials to the Self Builder is affected by three main
factors:
The lack of knowledge of the Self Builder
There
is no doubt that it costs the builders merchant more to service the needs of a
Self Builder than a professional tradesman. The tradesman often knows exactly
what materials he wants, how much he needs and when he needs it. The average
Self Builder, however, is normally reliant on others to specify and quantify
materials and, indeed, many merchants offer different types of "take
off" services to attract this customer. The problem, of course, is that the
Self Builder will not know if the materials and individual products chosen are
providing best value.
Spending Volume
Most
building material suppliers rely on a range of customers with different levels
of spend, eg a National Housebuilder may build several thousand homes each year
and spend millions of pounds with their chosen suppliers. A jobbing builder may
spend some £50,000 per annum. What is certain is that they buy the materials at
different prices. Both pay "trade price" but at different levels. The
more you spend, the cheaper the materials.
Credit control
Every
business has a credit control policy and the builders merchant is no exception.
A suitable credit limit is absolutely vital to a smooth running building
project. The last thing a professional builder or a Self Builder wants is to
have work stop as a result of lack of materials!
