Help With Choosing the Right Door Handles

If you are looking for door handles, then there are three very important factors which you need to consider. This will ensure that you make the right choice, both in terms of looks and of practicality. Anyone under the impression that purchasing handles is a simple matter is obviously totally unaware of just how many different ones there are to choose from. And without a little care it is all too easy to end up with the wrong type of door fitting altogether.

The Right Handle For The Right Room

You will want a door handle that is in keeping with each room of your home and most of this will depend on your colour scheme, furniture or fittings. Brass or wrought iron door handles will look great in a home with a rustic theme whilst glass or chrome is a perfect choice for a contemporary styled room.

Children’s bedrooms may benefit from acrylic handles because they are so simple to keep clean and stainless steel will look great in a modern bathroom setting.

Settling on a Style

Door Handles are available in a huge variety of styles and, before going any further, you will need to decide which of these will be the most suitable choice for your door/s. To narrow down your options, there are few basic elements to bear in mind –

a) Lever – The functional part of a handle is clearly going to be its most immediately noticeable feature, so it is vital to make the right choice. And when it comes to levers, there are many designs to choose from. Are you looking for door handles with straight or curved levers? And do you want a Classic, Antique or Contemporary look for your home?

b) Rose/Backplate - The part of the handle that fits to a door is called a ‘backplate’ or a ‘rose’. However, these are not merely a functional component and they can be found in a variety of shapes and sizes; round, square, patterned or plain.

c) With or Without a Lock – Obviously, handles for external doors will need a secure lock, but we all have certain rooms within our homes that require a degree of privacy. And there are plenty of door handles to serve this exact purpose. Any good supplier will have a large selection of handles with a built-in privacy lock and they will all have an ‘emergency unlock’ feature fitted to them as an added safety measure.

Choosing a Material

When it comes to choosing a material for your handles, you are certainly going to be spoilt for choice. Most suppliers will have a selection that includes; brass, chrome, wrought iron, acrylic, aluminium, stainless steel, porcelain and glass. Some handles will also be constructed from a combination of materials. For example, there are some very attractive porcelain door handles on the market which are attached to a brass backplate. And this mixture of styles will add an even greater variety to the range of handles on offer.
